Hal Brierley

Senior Advisor Member

Hal began his career in direct marketing more than 40 years ago and remains one of the most innovative and respected strategic thinkers in the field. Graduating Harvard Business School in 1968, he co-founded and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Epsilon Data Management, one of the nation’s leading database marketing companies. In 1980, Hal was retained as the only outside consultant to work on the design of American Airlines AAdvantage®, the world’s first frequent-flyer program. In 1982, he became Vice President of Sales and Advertising for Pan American World Airways, where he launched WorldPass®, Pan Am’s frequent-traveler program. In 1983, he was named Senior Vice President of Marketing for Continental Airlines.

Hal resumed his entrepreneurial career with the launch of Brierley+Partners in 1985, supporting loyalty program design efforts for over 200 of the world’s leading consumer brands. In 1999, he founded e-Rewards as Chairman and CEO and directed its sales growth to over $105 million in 2009, managing multiple rounds of financing and its acquisition of Research Now. In 2002, Hal created The Brierley Group as a consulting and venture development firm and has continued to expand its role to include the creation of innovative, digital customer programs.

In recognition of his significant contributions and leadership in the industry, Hal was inducted into The Direct Marketing Association Hall of Fame in 2012.

Chris Forsberg

Advisory Board Member

Chris Forsberg is an operations executive with over 20 years of experience and successes in leading teams through the design, development, and launch of leading-edge solutions and processes. His background is in operationally leading retailers and merchandising services organizations through technology and process innovations.

Specializing in retail and merchandising operations, he most recently served as Sr. Director of Operations (“COO” role) for Home Depot’s internal merchandising execution team. Here drove efficiency and effectiveness for their 24,000+ associate workforce. This includes leading several organizational transitions for the overall Home Depot and doubling the resources, productivity, and safety metrics of his organization. He also led the tasking reduction of over $56M worth of labor, enabling more customer service. His organizational successes have been featured on recent Home Depot earnings reports, “as a key store productivity driver.”

He also served as Vice President of Operations for Mosaic Sales Solutions, a merchandising services company. Here he oversaw the integration of several acquisitions and international businesses. He reduced costs and turnover while increasing productivity and quality, resulting in doubling the company size during his tenure.

Owen Hannay

Owen founded Slingshot in 1995 with the belief that clients and agencies were missing out on opportunities enabled by the exploding media landscape and digital environment. Prior to that, he spent seven years running businesses as diverse as Tom-Thumb Grocery Stores, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts and Pergo Flooring at The Richards Group. Owen started his career planning media for brands owned by Nestlé and Anheuser Busch for what is now known as Publicis Mid-America. One of Owen’s first loves was architecture, which was his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. Later Owen would return to his hometown of Dallas where he would earn his MBA at SMU. And while he’s worn many hats throughout his career, his favorite two are those of husband and dad.

Mark Kaline

Mark Kaline is an accomplished, 30+ year media veteran who has worked for media companies, advertising agencies and major corporations. Most recently, Mr. Kaline has served at Senior Global Director of Media for the Kimberly-Clark Corporation where he was directly responsible for leading all media planning & buying operations globally as well as the development and management of K-C’s industry leading programmatic buying solution.

Prior to joining Kimberly-Clark, Mr. Kaline served as Global Media Manager for the Ford Motor Company, where he was responsible for Global media operations on behalf of all Ford Motor Company brands as well as all branded entertainment.

Mr. Kaline serves on several industry association committees and boards of directors, including the Association for National Advertisers, the WFA, the Council for Research Excellence and has held past positions on Nielsen’s Advertiser Advisory Board, Traffic Audit Bureau Board of Directors, and the Audit Bureau of Circulation Board of Directors.

Melisse Shaban

Board Member

Melisse Shaban is a strategist and marketer of innovative retail concepts in the health and beauty industry. With more than 25 years of experience in consumer applications, she has demonstrated expertise in skin care, hair care, retail operations, and molding medical service concepts into viable consumer brands.

In January 2005 she established Chrysallis, a full-service management team dedicated to the nurturing and development of niche retail brands to position them for future growth and success. As head of Chrysallis, Melisse is charged with identifying unique concepts for investment, development, and growth, as well as leading growth strategies for her clients’ brand portfolios.

In this role to date, she has overseen investments in companies including StriVectin, the fastest growing prestige anti-aging skin care brand in America, Frédéric Fekkai, a leading prestige hair care and salon brand, and Niadyne, Inc., a company dedicated to the discovery and development of topical products for the treatment and prevention of sun damage to the skin. Under her leadership, the Fekkai company achieved year-on-year double-digit growth, which led to the acquisition of Fekkai by the Procter & Gamble Company in May 2008.

Prior to Chrysallis, Melisse served as Head of Consumer Genomics for Genaissance Pharmaceuticals, with primary responsibility for identifying consumer applications for genetic discoveries, leading to a successful joint venture with Sciona, Inc., a genetic science firm based in the U.K.

Her previous roles have included a variety of leadership positions for globally known brands, including servings as Chief Operating Officer & General Manager of the U.S. pision of The Body Shop, the global beauty retailer, and General Manager of the Aveda Corp. She began her career as an Account Director with Revlon, where she was responsible for product development for department store distribution.

Peter C. Ku

Peter C. Ku is an intellectual property and commercial transactions attorney, who is currently Director of Business Development, Strategic Alliances & Legal Affairs at SMART Technologies ULC, the world’s leading Unified Communications and Collaboration company that has just introduced the revolutionary SMART kapp product into the commercial marketplace. Peter has been practicing intellectual property and commercial transactions law for over twenty years, and was formerly Associate General Counsel at Microsoft Corporation, and Division Counsel at Intellectual Ventures. Peter lives in Redmond, Washington with his wife, Grace, and two daughters, Sydney and Ashley.

Brian Schultz

Advisory Board Member

Brian Schultz is the Founder/Owner and CEO of Studio Movie Grill, a modern in-theater cinema-dining concept combining first-run movies with table service restaurants. Schultz is credited as the leader and innovator of this rapidly growing segment of the exhibition industry. He championed and won the ability to show first-run movies for his Movie Grill concept 17 years ago, opening the original Studio Movie Grill in 2000, and allowing for the cinema-dining segment of the movie exhibition industry to see enormous growth in recent years.

Previously, Schultz worked in the political sphere as an aide to the late United States Senator from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter.

Schultz, who received a Bachelor of Science in Business Finance from California State University, is a founding member of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization. He was the recipient of the 2013 Regional Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year®.

Alan P. Shor

Advisory Board Member

Alan P. Shor, a co-founder of The Retail Connection, L.P. in January, 2004, serves as its President and Co-Chairman of the Board of Directors. Alan is involved in the strategic direction and oversees the day-to-day operations of the company and also leads its investment and merchant banking business. He is an operating partner with Parallel Investment Partners and Brazos Private Equity Partners, leading private equity firms with great experience and success in retail investments. Alan was formerly a Board member of Teavana Holdings and is currently a member of three other retail Boards.

Prior to launching The Retail Connection, Alan served as President, Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Zale Corporation, North America’s largest specialty retailer of fine jewelry with 2,300 retail locations throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. As President and COO, he was responsible for all support functions and operations of the company including real estate, construction and design, technology, legal, human resources, distribution, loss prevention, credit and customer service.

Alan joined Zale in 1995 as its Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. Prior to joining Zale, he spent 12 years with Troutman Sanders, a national law firm, where he built a strong track record of advising the senior management teams of Fortune 1000 companies. Alan was the Managing Partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office at the time of his departure.

Alan is active in a number of professional and charitable organizations and is an adjunct professor at the Edwin L. Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University. He is a member of the World President’s Organization, National Retail Federation and International Council of Shopping Centers. Alan has served on the Board of Directors of UPLIFT Education, a charter school initiative to create and sustain schools of excellence for students of diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds and was the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center of Dallas from 2009-2011. He currently sits on the Boards of the Aaron Family JCC, Temple Emanu-El and the JFGD.

Alan graduated with honors from both the University of Georgia and University of Georgia School of Law.
